How can you create a home spa? You need a well-designed space, adequate ventilation, and surfaces that can withstand water and steam. With these essential elements, the bathroom can be transformed into a place dedicated to relaxation, where wellness is no longer an occasional luxury but becomes part of your daily routine.
A home spa does not necessarily require a large amount of space. What really matters is the quality of the design: every element, from the washbasin to the shower, contributes to the overall feeling of comfort. In this guide, we explore where to start and why solid surface materials such as Krion and Corian can make a real difference.
How to Create a Home Spa: Where to Start
The first step is to assess the space available. A master bathroom, a room close to the sleeping area, or an underused corner of the home can all be transformed into a small home spa. Defining the desired features from the start, such as a walk-in shower, bathtub, or relaxation bench, makes it easier to guide every subsequent design choice.
Next come the technical checks: air circulation, protection against moisture, and plumbing and electrical systems carefully designed by qualified professionals. Creating a home spa also means choosing surfaces that are easy to clean and maintain, as steam and heat can put every material to the test. Careful planning helps prevent corrective work, delays, and unexpected costs later in the project.
Krion, Corian and Solid Surface: Materials for Home Wellness
Solid surface is a non-porous, homogeneous composite material that feels warm and pleasant to the touch. Krion and Corian, two of the best-known brands in this category, are resistant to moisture, cleaning products, and intensive daily use, while maintaining their colour and compact appearance over time. For a home spa, they are a hygienic and durable choice.
Their compact surface helps prevent bacteria and mould from settling, which is a major advantage in warm, humid wellness environments. Solid surface is also thermoformable, meaning it can be shaped into curves and organic forms that are ideal for sculptural washbasins, seating, and custom-designed surfaces in a home spa. Joints are almost invisible, creating a continuous, elegant, and practical overall appearance.
Custom Showers, Bathtubs and Washbasins for Your Home Spa
Every space has its own dimensions and design constraints, which standard solutions rarely accommodate perfectly. GP Design, an artisan workshop operating since 1978 in the province of Vicenza, works with Krion, Corian, and wood to create seamless showers, bathtubs, integrated washbasins, wall coverings, and custom-made bathroom furniture.
Thermoforming, micro-engraving, and texturing make it possible to create unique surfaces with soft curves, personalised patterns, and details designed to interact with light and water. Showers can be created flush with the floor, while bathtubs can be freestanding or built-in, always following the shape, dimensions, and colour defined by the project. Washbasins can also be backlit upon request.
Hygiene and Maintenance: Surfaces Designed to Last
A home spa is constantly exposed to steam, water, and essential oils, all of which put finishes under daily stress. Solid surface materials do not absorb liquids and can be cleaned with gentle detergents, maintaining a smooth and tidy appearance over the years. The absence of joints also eliminates critical areas where dirt and mould tend to accumulate.
If scratches or signs of wear appear, the material can be restored through professional sanding and refinishing. GP Design offers a dedicated repair service for Corian and Krion surfaces, restoring them to their original condition without lengthy and demanding replacement work. This is an important advantage that helps preserve the value of the investment over time.
Atmosphere and Continuity: Designing the Sensory Experience
Wellness also comes from visual consistency. Neutral tones, warm adjustable lighting, and natural materials create the enveloping and relaxing atmosphere that makes a home spa special. Continuous surfaces enhance the feeling of order and cleanliness, while custom textures engraved into the material add depth, rhythm, and character to the overall design.
Wood and solid surface work naturally together: wood brings warmth to the environment, while solid surface provides practicality in areas exposed to water. A custom-made design balances these two materials and integrates every element into the existing architecture, enhancing even the most compact spaces in the home. Continuity between finishes creates a smooth and harmonious visual flow.
Frequently Asked Questions About Creating a Home Spa
How much space do you need for a home spa?
There is no universal minimum size. Even a compact bathroom can become a small home spa when the design makes the most of continuous surfaces, custom-made furniture, and practical circulation within the space.
What materials should you choose for a home spa?
Solid surface materials such as Krion and Corian are ideal because they are non-porous, hygienic, moisture-resistant, and thermoformable. They make it possible to create integrated washbasins, seamless showers, and customised shapes that complement the overall style of the home.
Can Krion and Corian surfaces be repaired?
Yes. Scratches and dull areas can be removed through professional sanding carried out by a specialised workshop. This process restores the surface and extends its lifespan without the need for replacement.
